In 2018, I was fortunate to be selected for the competitive scholarship for the Study of the US Institutes (SUSI) programme. I am thankful to the US-UK Fulbright Commission, FHI 360, and the U.S. Department of State, for selecting and funding me for this rewarding opportunity.
SUSI is an intensive programme for student leaders. It aims to increase the cultural understanding of the US and develop the leadership skills of its participants.
Over the course of 5 weeks, across the states between South Carolina and Washington DC, 22 students from across Europe came together to understand Civic Engagement and develop projects for the betterment of their home communities.
In my time at the University of South Carolina, I learned beyond the classroom. I had the opportunity to volunteer in a food bank, help to build a house, work with disadvantaged young people, and push myself outside of my comfort zone in unexpected ways. I concluded the programme with a project presented to the US Department of State on educational equality.
I developed a deeper understanding of the problems in both my home community and in the US. The programme, and the incredible people I met along the way, have inspired me to remain civically engaged and work to improve my community.
